There are 4 test matches to be played between India and England in 2021. First two of them in Chepauk Stadium, Chennai and the other two (one of them is a day-night fixture) at the newly constructed Mot-era Stadium, Ahmadabad India.

As of now, I can predict the playing XI of the Indian team for first test match only, which is scheduled to be played between 5 February - 9 February 2021 at Chennai.

India might play with 5 batsmen and 5 bowlers as the hot and humid conditions of Chepauk will demand more emphasis on 5 bowlers.

Openers:

1. Rohit Sharma: Although the Rohit Sharma were played just 2 tests against Australia in England, but he had a good test series there, scoring 52 runs in one of the innings. On the subcontinental pitches, he should be an automatic choice for opener’s spot.

2. Shubman Gill: He’s found his feet in the recent test series against Australia and the captain, Virat Kohli should not drop him as it would dent his confidence.

Middle-Order:

3. Cheteshwar Pujara: Important mainstay for India, he has a good record while playing on turning tracks.

4. Virat Kohli (c): The Captain King Kohli of Indians team returns back after being blessed with a daughter. He will be fresh and eager to score test hundreds, which he couldn’t do in 2020.

5. Ajinkya Rahane: 

Keeps his place after scoring an important and match-winning 112 runs at Melbourne. Also, we can’t drop a batsman who has been the captain for India in 3 tests against Australia.

6. Rishabh Pant (wk):

He will give variety to batting line-up with his left-handedness as well as play an attacking innings. He will carry his good form with wicket-keeping as the team might have moved from Wriddhiman Saha as a first-choice wicket keeper.

Bowlers:

7. Washington Sundar:

Stunned and impressed everyone with his batting and spin-bowling at pace-friendly Gabby pitch, this 21-year spin bowling all-rounder should be in the starting XI on his home ground in Checkup.

8. Axar Patel: The slow left-arm orthodox spinner might get a big break in absence of injured Ravindra Jadeja, as he’ll be a like-for-like replacement for Jadeja.

9. Ravichandran Ashwin: He shall be fit for time being, and will complement Sundar as a right-arm off-spinner. He has also found his batting mojo after scoring a crucial 39* against Australia, hence saving the test.

10. Mohammad Siraj: After impressing in the recent outing against Australia, he seems to be a perfect fit in place of Mohammad Shami, who might not be considered for the 1st test owing to a fractured right arm.
