James Anderson bowled 20 overs for the second XI of Lancashire on the first day of his friendly at Chester Bufton Hall as he tried to prove his fitness for the fourth Ashes Test.

The 37-year-old is recovering from a calf injury that reduced his participation in the Ashes opener at Edgbaston and ruled him out of the next two Tests at Lord's and Headingley.

James Anderson, who returned in a friendly against Leicestershire last week, started the match at Chester by six wickets against a Durham Second XI.

The all-time leading wicket-taker of England suffered a calf injury in the County Championship action for Lancashire against Durham at Sedbergh School in June.

His fitness for the first Test was in doubt and he managed just four overs on the first morning at Edgbaston before leaving the field and sidelined him for the rest of the match.

England was said to be eager to prove their fitness for James Anderson before any possible return, this is their last opportunity ahead of the fourth Test at Old Trafford with a specially arranged friendly at Chester which will take place from 4 September is triggered.

Anderson came through the first morning of the four-day match against a strong Durham side, including Champions regulars including captain Ned Eckersley, Cameron Steele, Jack Burnham, and Chris Rushworth.

His second spell also provided further impetus, starting with two overs before lunch and continuing for seven overs after the interval.

He also took the first wicket of the match, dismissing Durham opener Angus Robson for 51 during those overs.

Anderson had figures of 16 for one of his first 15 overs, which appeared that this would be his limit of work for the day but he returned to the attack to take a second new ball.

James Anderson claimed one for 38 of his 20 overs, as Durham closed at 288 for four, and showed no signs of injury.
