Captaincy in Australia is unlike other countries. Pitches certainly have extra bounce, but if good batsmen are set, they can be difficult to remove and require a dose of positive imagination to bring it down. Just as the most difficult adjustment for a batsman is on low to high bounce pitches, the same applies to captaincy. The captain of the subcontinent is at a disadvantage as they become so accustomed to having fieldsmen around the bat for spinners that they often appear beyond consideration when called for substitutes.
Captaincy should be one of the major topics of discussion before a team visits Australia.
The disappointing thing about Pakistan's disqualification in Australia is that they produce fast bowlers. Fast bowling is critical to success in Australia; Douglas Jardine understood when he unveiled the bodyline in 1932–33. The West Indies are equipped with a battery of fast bowlers, led by Clive Lloyd and then Viv Richards, better than any other team. In 2018–19, Virat Kohli cleverly used a diverse attack, resulting in his strongest fast bowling team for the tour of Australia, and clinched the series win.
Pakistan have fast bowlers to harass Australia, but some misguided tactics have negated their skills. It probably did not help that recently the group of fast bowlers was quite inexperienced and in danger of advancing, but they fell short of some put captaincy.
Even the best bowlers need to be supported by thoughtful and strategic areas, which helps in boosting their confidence.
Under any circumstances the initial spread of the area is misguided, but in Australia it may be terminal. Courtesy of large boundaries, balls are hit at deep points and square leg (unless they are directly near a fielder) often resulting in couplets and sometimes thrash. When this happens regularly and a good player inevitably gets the boundary, a fielding team walks without presenting any risk for batting.
The type of grounds set by Pakistan in the last three tours of Australia depended on the batsmen regularly dismissing themselves. Good batsmen resemble Scrooge at Christmas - they are allergic to any giant gesture.
It is not only the captains of the subcontinent who struggle under Australian conditions. Both Alastair Cook and Joe Root were often lost to ideas on the last two Ashes tours. The plight of England in 2013–14 was even more frightening as Cook regularly gave Australia five wickets for less than 150 but he somehow managed to achieve the 0–5 series result.
Despite doing a good job in the previous tour and possibly overseeing a better attack for next summer's series, Kohli could face a different type of challenge in Australia.
