CORONA VIRUS SECOND WAVE COVID-19

 Why does everybody think COVID-19 is worse than influenza?

1. Other than a once in a century pandemic Influenza A virus that predates the era of modern medicine, the novel COVID-19 pandemic has infected more people and killed more people worldwide in a shorter amount of time than the Influenza A virus does in any given year. This is despite our better efforts to try and contain the damage, our much better awareness of what drives viral spread. The current rates of infection are in spite of masks, in spite of partial or smart lock downs.
2. The novel COVID-19 pandemic is largely transmitted by asymptomatic people (“true” asymptomatic who will remain that way and Pre-symptomatic who will start developing symptoms a day or two after you’ve had coffee with them). This makes this virus much more infectious than many other viruses. A single infected individual can transmit the virus to dozens of people during the same super-spreading event.
3. The novel about COVID-19 pandemic is largely transmitted by bio-aerosols, a very small droplets containing the dangerous virus that float around in enclosed spaces without setting down for a long period of time, like dust particles. Or asbestos. This makes it much more transmissible than Influenza A, which is largely transmitted by larger droplets (and contaminated surfaces upon which those droplets settle) being shed by people who are clearly symptomatic and coughing up a storm or sneezing.
4. The novel COVID-19 pandemic sends a larger number of infected to the hospital than Influenza A. It also leads to a larger number of people requiring an ICU bed. It also leads to a larger number of people dying, despite all of the advances in medicine and the fact that we have gotten better at treating people with CORONA VIRUS pandemic related distress. People who end up in the ICU because of CORONA VIRUS pandemic stay in the ICU for extended periods of time — often several weeks; extreme cases can be several months.
5. Because no flu season lasts a whole, unrelenting, year in each hemisphere. No flu season keeps killing more than a thousand Americans a day 9 months into the current flu season. No flu season has killed nearly 400,000 Americans in recent memory. Sure, so far we’re only talking about 270,000 dead Americans. But we’re going to be north of 1,500 daily fatalities for the foreseeable future, given Thanksgiving travel, the upcoming holidays, and winter. And people who deny that the virus is real, or that it’s no worse than the flu by several objective measures, exist and are rather numerous.

6. There is no vaccine. Yet. That’s like saying that there is no water to try and put out the fire and the trees in the forest keep inviting each other to their homes and one of them is secretly on fire and soon enough they are all going to be engulfed in flames.
7. The rate of serious long-term complications is far higher than the flu. A great point that I had forgotten due to the litany of other things I had already mentioned. And this is the nasty gift that will keep on giving for years to come: long-term damage to the lungs, neurological damage, possible long-term damage to the heart and circulatory system, even among people who “recovered” without ever setting a foot in the hospital. I have an acquaintance that lost her sense of smell and taste 9 months ago. It hasn’t returned. Those are signs of possible long-term neurological damage. The correctly pointed out that we really don’t know the rate of serious long-term complications from Influenza A and other pulmonary infections. Nonetheless, we know that SARS-CoV-2 does damage to endothelial tissue lining our vessels, so many doctors are worried about this long-term damage.

Yes, this novel is about CORONA VIRUS pandemic is just like very terrible news. I’m going to use the words of one of my favorite TV channel shows where a character described her husband’s breath as rotting fish inside of a fart factory. It’s like, the worst things in a virus compounded by something that makes it even worse. At least Ebola is highly visible. You can more easily avoid the person that is bleeding out of every orifice and people are most infectious when they are also most conspicuously severely ill. This virus is primarily spreading because people without symptoms are getting together with people outside of their household. And then it turns out that one of them was infected. And then Grandma ends up in the hospital or worse.

It’s not a matter of opinion. It is worse than the flu; it is ten times more likely to kill you and can leave you with a myriad of life-long health problems. The flu doesn’t normally cause brain damage, lung failure, pneumonia, I can go on.

This is a completely new virus that humans have little to no immunity to. The scariest thing is that COVID-19 pandemic spreads like a mother; asymptomatic carriers can spread this thing so it’s a lot more difficult to contain than the common flu. We have a vaccine but it will take months before it is available to the general public.
